Knitting the Air: The Exhibition
4 – 20 September 2026 | Nunnery Gallery, Bow
Over two and a half years, 132 residents of Poplar, Bow and east London spent thousands of hours knitting air pollution data, and the result is something extraordinary. This September, their work goes on display as a 13-metre textile that visualises a full year of air quality data, created by the very communities who breathe that air.
The exhibition also features a new film that spotlights the knitters who gave thousands of hours to make this work, alongside more than 400 responses from the wider east London community, sharing what clean air means to them, their concerns for their health, and their hopes for change.
A public programme of free creative workshops, events and talks accompanies the exhibition, inviting people to explore air, place and community, to connect with the work and share their perspectives.
Knitting the Air: The Exhibition is supported using public funding from Arts Council England and in partnership with The Aberfeldy Practice, Imperial College London, Bow Arts Trust, and London College of Fashion.
